Last week saw a who’s-who of fashion editors and buyers flocking to Milan to attend the prestigious Milan Menswear Fashion Week. The menswear trends for Autumn / Winter 2012 were previewed at esteemed fashion houses including Prada and Gucci.

A constant theme across the shows was best described by the title of the Burberry Prorsum collection: ‘The Gentleman’. Streamlined, tailored three-piece suits featured in most designer’s work; with some leaning towards a dandy-inspired way of dressing and others fusing relaxed elements with formal by throwing casual jackets over neat suiting. This refined style of dress is perhaps inspired by the immaculately dressed men photographed for and featured on The Sartorialist blog.

Burberry Prorsum

Effortlessly fusing elegant tailoring and the casual artisan elements usually associated with his designs, Christopher Bailey produced an easy-to-wear collection suitable for the country gentleman. Traditional charcoal grey double breasted jackets and modern skinny tailored trousers were paired with colourful patterned knitwear and flat caps that hinted at a younger take on the sartorial trend. Burberry is famed for its extensive outerwear collections and this season Bailey offered everything from duffle coats to the traditional trench to oversized colour-blocked padded jackets, all slung nonchalantly over the shoulders.

Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana presented a Victorian-inspired collection, awash with heavy wool capes, bow ties and baker boy caps. Three-piece suits in charcoal grey were paired with high-collared starched white shirts and thick-knitted jumpers, worn layered underneath long capes and double-breasted overcoats. Ornate gold embroidery adorned jackets, capes and trousers; adding an aristocratic element to the collection. Dandy-influences were abundant; with flamboyant velvet suits, indulgent silks and flashes of rich hues of jewelled colours mixed amongst the grey.

Ermenegildo Zegna

Established suiting brand, Ermenegildo Zegna offered a more casual collection than usually expected. New creative director, Paul Surridge fused exquisite suiting with a 1970s alpine-influence – pairing tailored suits with shearling lined leather jackets and cosy Fair Isle knits. Checked suits and smart shirts were layered over cashmere turtlenecks, for an effortless suggestion of how to wear the look.

Gucci

Influenced by the teenage poet character of Arthur Rimbaud from the film Total Eclipse, Frida Giannini described Gucci’s Autumn / Winter collection as ‘Viscount Grunge’. Luxurious devore velvet suits were paired with thick Arran knitted jumpers and sturdy riding boots, fusing elegance with more casual wear. Tailored suits were emblazoned with baroque dark floral prints, layered with oversized coats. A colour palette predominately of black and charcoal grey was intersected by rich hues of oxblood red and midnight blue.

Prada

Miuccia Prada’s theatrical collection drew inspiration from aristocracy and the era of the Dandy, with elements of a military influence also apparent. Double breasted jackets, complimented by flowers placed in their button-holes were worn over white t-shirts designed to appear as a shirt and tie. Victorian-inspired top coats worn over three-piece suits were abundant; presented in choices of heavy charcoal wool and ornately patterned jacquard. The regal look reigned throughout the collection; with astrakhan collars and opulently patterned silk neck scarves complimenting the theme.

Cult Australian brand One Teaspoon offers a collection of nonchalant clothing with a bohemian edge.

Jamie Blakey founded the brand in 2000; initially running it out of her bedroom, based in the North Beach area of Sydney. Since the brand’s conception, it has grown from strength to strength and has been endorsed by numerous It-girls including Rumi Neely and Nicole Ritchie.

One Teaspoon emits the vibe that is usually associated with laid-back LA style. Bold leopard and butterfly prints are dispersed through the collection.

For the perfect holiday wardrobe, One Teaspoon is the perfect brand to wear for a week of relaxing in an idyllic location.

Sweetheart

Look pretty in pink.... and lilac, lemon, mint green and duck egg blue. Sugared almond shades in a delectable range of fabrics featured in a broad range of collections. Spearheaded by Louis Vuitton’s 1950’s inspired candy-coloured merry-go-round, the theme of the season was ultra-girly and pastel-hued. Miuccia Prada presented an inspiring collection filled with ice-cream shades, accordion-pleated skirts and prim accessories – mixed in with hot-rod prints and injections of vibrant red. Pretty pastel lace dresses featured at Valentino, whilst Diane von Furstenberg showcased appliqué florals.

Kaleidoscope

Innovative digital prints in bright hues were boldly mixed-and-matched all across the Spring/Summer collections. Inspired by the new generation of London designers experimenting with prints, designers across the globe got to grips with pattern, styling the look head-to-toe. Mary Katrantzou was at the forefront of the digital-print revolution, inspired in this collection by flora and fauna. Her vivid prints of sea-life and plant-life were emblazoned across her trailing chiffon gowns. Batik prints featured at Burberry, whilst Matthew Williamson’s exotic patterns hinted at tropical locations and Dolce & Gabbana presented a collection inspired by Italian cooking.

The Great Gatsby

Channel the iconic character of Daisy Buchanan in a glamorous drop-waisted flapper dress. With the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic novel being released as a film later this year, the 1920s are set to be a huge trend for Spring/Summer. The admiration of the Jazz Age was heralded at Gucci, where Frida Giannini was influenced by the art-deco architecture of the Chrysler building when designing her geometric prints and elaborate fringed dresses.

Primary Colours

Bright pops of colour flooded the Spring/Summer catwalks, with hues of canary yellow, bold coral and royal blue being the shades of choice. A move on from the bejewelled tones of the previous season, these colours are fresh, vivid and work best worn head-to-toe. Guillaume Henry showcased this entire colour palette at Carven, worn mixed with embroidered patterns and crisp whites. At Mulberry, it was shades of yellow that brightened the catwalks, whilst Matthew Williamson paraded vivid tangerines and Acne presented a selection of vibrant blues.
